In July 2018, the Oman Observer reported that the government procurer Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) planned to tender a water project at the Wadi Dayqah dam internationally. The scheme was sized at 90,000 to 125,000 m³/day for drinking and irrigation water in the Muscat area. A reverse osmosis stage was to supply 67,000 m³/day of potable water. Prequalification was planned for Q3 2018, with commercial operation targeted for early 2021. The basis was OPWP's new 7-Year Statement covering 2018 to 2024.
The report showed that Oman intended to treat surface water by reverse osmosis alongside seawater desalination. The same planning document listed further desalination projects, including Ghubrah III at 300,000 m³/day.
