In April 2019, Tuas Desalination Plant was named Desalination Plant of the Year at the Global Water Awards in London, The Straits Times reported. It was the first plant owned and operated by the national water agency PUB and Singapore's third desalination plant. Other shortlisted nominees were Barka 4 in Oman, Djerba in Tunisia and Galalah in Egypt. Located on a 3.5-hectare site, the plant produces up to 30 million gallons of drinking water a day, enough for about 200,000 households.
The award showed that a plant run by a public agency could compete internationally. According to PUB, its robust pre-treatment and reliance on clean energy stood out.
