Raw water quality halts desalination plant, Point Lisas, Trinidad

In September 2021, CNC3 reported that the Point Lisas desalination plant had stopped because of problems with the quality of its raw water. According to the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA), customers across central and south-western Trinidad had low pressure or no supply. The company DESALCOTT owned and ran the plant, which normally delivered 40 million gallons a day (about 182,000 m³/d) to WASA. No restart date was given; water trucks served homes, health facilities and government institutions first.

The report showed how heavily parts of Trinidad depended on a single desalination plant: when it failed, supply initially relied on nothing more than a limited trucked water service.
