In March 2022, Gulf Times reported that Qatar University (QU) had published the Gulf region's first book on reverse osmosis desalination. The title "Reverse Osmosis Systems: Design, Optimisation and Troubleshooting Guide" was published by Elsevier and is available online. It was written by Prof. Syed Javaid Zaidi with co-author Haleema Saleem of QU's Center for Advanced Materials (CAM). CAM works with Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) on more efficient desalination and runs a joint Water Technology Unit.
The report came as Qatar's desalination industry, according to CAM acting director Mohamed Irshidat, was shifting from thermal processes to membrane-based reverse osmosis, and showed the country building its own expertise.
