Mobile desalination unit dismantled, Paphos, Cyprus

In March 2016, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported, citing the Cypriot newspapers Politis and Cyprus Mail, that a mobile desalination unit serving Paphos was being taken apart. The €30 million (US$33 million) unit beside the Xeros River at Kouklia had been ordered in 2008 during a severe drought and installed in 2010. Because the Asprokremmos dam covered demand, it ran only briefly while the dam underwent maintenance. Andreas Manoli of the water development department said a permanent Paphos plant was under consideration, with a decision due in April.

The case illustrated the risk of emergency capacity bought in a crisis: once reservoirs recovered, the mobile unit lost its purpose and planning turned to a permanent option linked to reservoir levels.
