In July 2017, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported that Cyprus' Water Development Department intended to put a seawater reverse osmosis plant at Kouklia near Paphos out to tender by late September 2017. The 15,000 m³/day facility was to reuse the intake and connecting pipes of a temporary plant since dismantled. The contract was to cover design, construction, and operation and maintenance for 25 years. Cyprus aimed to source 30 percent of its water from desalination by 2020, with a 20 percent target for reused water.
The report showed how heavily Cyprus already relied on desalination for drinking water and how it added capacity step by step, alongside targets for reusing treated wastewater.
