Authorities halt private desalination plant, Krishnapuram, India

In July 2017, The Hindu reported that the district administration in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, had ordered South Ganga Water Technology Private Limited to temporarily halt its desalination plant at Krishnapuram. A joint committee had found on a follow-up inspection that the required upgrades were still missing. The 500 m³/day plant had run since 2005 and delivered its output to the Vazhuthur power station nearby. Villagers accused it of polluting local water sources, which the company denied.

The report showed that even small industrial desalination plants faced official oversight and local protest at the time when residents feared effects on their water sources.
