In June 2017, The Economic Times reported from the Atomexpo fair in Moscow that Russia could offer desalination technology to India on request. Andrey Nikipelov, head of the Rosatom equipment maker Atomenergomash, called desalination a growing business and pointed to a Russian-built facility in Kazakhstan, while stating there were no concrete plans for India yet. According to Rosatom, desalination integrated into a nuclear plant can serve regions of up to 1 million people. The Kudankulam plant in Tamil Nadu included provision for supplying water to residents.
The report showed how reactor builders were marketing desalination as an add-on to nuclear projects at the time, using reactor heat and steam as the energy source for water treatment.
