In August 2021, the Oman Observer, citing the Oman News Agency (ONA), reported that the 230 km pipeline taking desalinated water from Suhar to Al Dhahirah Governorate was 81 percent complete and due to start operating before year-end. The builder was the utility OWWC (Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company). The scheme included 15 reservoirs holding 451,000 m³ in total in Suhar, Ibri and Dhank, plus four pumping stations rated at 144,000 m³/day. Until then, the region drew its drinking water from the Al Massarat groundwater basin.
The report showed how Oman moved desalinated water from the coast inland through long pipelines so that groundwater could be conserved and kept only as a reserve for emergencies.
