In January 2019, Daily Times reported that a Pakistani Senate committee had referred the case of the Gwadar desalination plant to the NAB. Designed for two million gallons a day, the plant had been installed but supplied no water, and its equipment was deteriorating. An inquiry had identified serious shortcomings in how the project was run. Senator Kauda Babar of Gwadar complained that billions of rupees had been spent while residents urgently needed water. Senator Agha Shahzaib Durrani chaired the meeting.
The report showed that a desalination plant which was built but not operated delivered no supply, and it put the water shortage of the emerging port city of Gwadar under parliamentary scrutiny.
