In April 2016, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported, citing The Times of India, that Indian oil and gas group ONGC intended to build its own reverse osmosis desalination plant at Uran, its largest site, for US$ 66 million (Rs 439 crore). Planned capacity was 20,000 m³/day (20 Ml/d). Supplier MIDC was contracted for 17,000 m³/day but delivered only 12,000 to 13,000 m³/day. According to the paper's sources, one lost day cost around Rs 10 crore. The Hazira gas plant was also considering desalination.
The report showed how industrial operators in India turned to their own desalination when public supply was unreliable, justifying the investment with the cost of outages.
